Drug abuse is one of the critical topics every parent must have time to talk about to their kids. It must not be taken lightly and parents must be careful not to give unclear or misleading messages to kids. When you educate your child about drugs, make sure you keep the discussion truthful and helpful. Here are some useful tips you need to keep in mind.
Research on drugs and drug abuse before you talk to your kids about them, so that if your kids ask you questions, you have credible answers. Your kids will trust your advice if they see that you know what you’re talking about.
Be truthful about the pleasurable effects of drugs. Do not lie, as you will only be teaching your kids to lie. Besides, they may get curious on why people try drugs when there is nothing to be gained from it. Tell your kids that people get high, happy or confused when they use drugs, and that these feelings may not be as intense or as fun as it initially was after a person gets addicted to drugs.
Talk to them about drugs more than once. Make use of timely opportunities to initiate small discussions on drugs, like when there is a related news report on TV, or an episode on a favorite TV series that touches drug abuse.
Include peer pressure in your discussions. Often, peer pressure plays a role in the addiction of kids. Work on building your child’s self-esteem and confidence so they can avoid succumbing to peer pressure. Also, constantly assure them of your love and guidance so they do not need to always work for the approval of peers, which could lead them to harmful vices.
